What is Spectacle?

Spectacle is an all-volunteer, non-hierarchical, collectively run microcinema established in 2010. We specialize in overlooked works, offbeat gems, contemporary art, radical polemics, live performance, and more.

Who’s in charge?

No one! That’s what “non-hierarchical” means. Volunteers decide the theater’s programming and logistics together through discussion and debate. Likewise, all operational concerns – running screenings, maintenance, bookkeeping, website management, and more – are handled by volunteers stepping forward to whatever tasks most suit them.

Who programs what the theater shows?

Programming is ideated, pitched, and developed by members of the collective. Other members give feedback on ideas, assist with making connections with filmmakers, distributors, and archives, and help source materials.

How does the theater get by financially?

Spectacle sustains itself on tickets sold for screenings, recurring membership subscriptions, rentals for private events, and occasional donations. Can I join the Spectacle collective as a volunteer?

Sure! If you’re interested in being part of a collective, non-hierarchical volunteer cinema and have consistent time to contribute, you’re welcome to apply. We only have capacity to onboard around two new volunteers each month, and because we have a substantial backlog of applicants, there can be a long lead time before we get to you. Thanks! The space has come a long way from its days as a bodega. But please ask the volunteer on duty for permission before taking any photos. It’s at their discretion and comfort.
